Often called the Salem Eckardt House, this home was built by his brother Andrew, Unionville’s first postmaster, a participant in the 1837 Rebellion and the son of a Berczy settler. The house was constructed in 1835. Purchased in the 1950s by another Eckardt descendant, Kathleen Gormley McKay, the house is most famous as home and studio of the artist Frederick Varley, who lived with the McKays. Today, operated by the Barley Gallery, the house serves as the Kathleen Gormley McKay Art Centre.
