This land was granted by the crown to Nathan Terry on December 8th, 1806. The land was soon sold to Isaiah Booth for a price of 100 pounds sterling. Booth then sold this plot of land to Philip Lichte for 150 pounds on September 2nd, 1808.Built in 1906, this structure was built to be used as the office for the Markham Economist newspaper.
The Markham Economist was founded in 1856 by noted Markham citizen David Reesor. The Economist was founded as a newspaper with strong reformist political viewpoints. This matched the beliefs of Reesor who was a staunch Liberal.
The Economist was the third paper in Markham’s history. Preceding the Economist was the Farmer’s Gazette, established in 1826. This was the first newspaper in York Region which was not published in the modern City of Toronto. Its existence was short lived, however, as was another nameless paper which was established in 1829 by Henry William Peterson. This ensured that from the early 1830s until 1856 that Markham would not have its own newspaper.
