Built 1850 Altered 1870. The Udell – Hamilton House was built in 1850 for Mary Udell, and her four children. Mary was the widow of Matthew Udell, who was imprisoned for his role in the infamous Markham Gang. In 1871, the property was sold to Abraham Hamilton, who is believed to have constructed the front addition to the house.

Architectural Attributes
The house is a unique example of the Picturesque Style of architecture in rural Markham. The house originally began as a one and a half story frame, Ontario Farmhouse, c. 1850. It is the dwelling in this form that is identified on the 1853 map of Markham Township. The larger massing on the present building appears to be of a style more popular during the last quarter of the 19th Century, indicating that it was expanded and enlarged to a full two story building at some point in the late 19th Century.
