Tremont Hotel 11

Community Markham
Year Constructed:  1873
Address: 123-131 Main Street North
Originally, the Anglo-American Hotel stood on this site. Unfortunately, it was one of the buildings on Main Street destroyed in the 1872 fire. The Tremont Hotel opened in the same location the following year and remained a hotel until 1960. the style of the building is Ontario Vernacular- Provincial Georgian In its heyday, Markham had 4 hotels here on Main Street. Part of our growth was because we were one day’s ride from York (Now known as Toronto) by horse. Travellers would come this far, stay in one of the fine hotels while selling their goods and services in the area. They’d then move on to Uxbridge or Richmond Hill.
