The Annswell Parkette, on Dudley near Elgin Street has its origins in the person of ‘holy’ Ann Preston, an Irish servant girl who came over with the Reid family in the 1830’s. her piety and association with several miracles led to her being called, often derisively, Holy Ann. Her prayer shed and the capped well are in the Park. When the well went dry, it is said that Ann’s prayers brought water forth again. Annswell Court seniors’ residence also perpetuates the name.
